Coinbase Asks Users to Stop Using VPNs and Ad Blockers
Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, has faced significant online backlash in recent days following an executive's social media statement advising all users against using the platform with VPNs, ad blockers, and related extensions.
- Scott Shapiro, Product Director at Coinbase, has advised users against utilizing VPNs when accessing their accounts.
- He clarified that Coinbase's risk model flags VPN usage suspicious, commonly linking it to malicious activities, even if the user is genuine.
"PSA: Don't use a VPN to access Coinbase. Attackers always use VPN's, so our risk models take that as a negative sign even if you're legitimately using your own account. Same with ad blockers and other extensions," he said on X.
- Unsurprisingly, the statement has drawn scrutiny from various security experts and advocates.
