Fedi's Community 'Super App' Officially Launched
  • Fedi aims to become the first 'Community Super app' - a decentralized alternative to legacy apps, driven by communities instead of corporations. This 'super app' consolidates multiple functions into one platform, enabling secure financial transactions, private chat, and social media all in one place.
"Early this year, we rolled out Fedi Bravo. It was a developmental release for testing and improving functionality that let us build a community superapp in active collaboration with our dedicated community of builders, pioneers, and Bitcoin enthusiasts. Thanks to their amazing work, we are ready to launch Fedi for the entire world," said Fedi founder and CEO Obi Nwosu.
  • Fedi users can join federations designed to build networks and reshape communities based on authentic relationships of trust, including families, villages, cooperatives, collectives, nonprofits, and other affinity groups.
  • The app links multiple protocols to empower users and help them reclaim their autonomy. It leverages Fedimint as an open-source Bitcoin custody protocol, integrates Lightning for faster and cheaper transactions, and utilizes Nostr for web of trust and discovery. The Matrix protocol facilitates secure communication.
"We think it’s important for Bitcoin and the Bitcoin ecosystem to have a really high quality app that allows you to leverage the entire set of technologies in the Bitcoin space in one easy to use package," Obi Nwosu told Unchained.
  • Fedi is currently "source available," meaning the code is available for inspection by the public, but the project is set to transition to a full AGPL open source license (Affero General Public License) by January 2026.
  • The company has teamed up with nonprofits like Refunite, reuniting refugees; The Kisaw Project, providing microloans to Sub-Saharan farmers; Mi Primer Bitcoin, an open-source Bitcoin education platform; and Save the Children, improving lives globally.
  • As a company, Fedi still operates as a for-profit venture. Nwosu stated that Fedi will charge 21 basis points for outgoing transactions, while receiving funds will be free - though other protocols may impose their own receiving fees.

The full launch event video, which covers the app’s history, features, and key use cases, can be viewed here.
