Ledger Co-Founder and His Wife Freed After Ransom Kidnapping (UPDATED)
David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, was kidnapped from his home in France early Tuesday and released Wednesday night following a police operation. According to the prosecutor’s office, the kidnappers demanded a large ransom in cryptocurrency.
- Following his kidnapping, Balland was transported by car to a different location and held captive there. The prosecutor’s office stated that he is currently receiving treatment from emergency services.
"The criminals demanded the payment of a significant ransom in cryptocurrency," said the prosecutors.
- The GIGN, one of France's elite tactical police units, was involved in the rescue operation. The police are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend all individuals involved, though no further details were provided.
- The wife of David Balland was also kidnapped on Tuesday and has since been rescued. Eight people have been arrested thus far in connection with the kidnappings. According to sources close to the case, the kidnappers accepted ransom in Tether (USDT), which was quickly seized and frozen.
