Russia Enacts 6-Year Blanket Ban on Bitcoin Mining in 10 Regions
The Russian government approved a six-year ban on Bitcoin mining in 10 regions, starting January 1, 2025. The ban will remain effective until March 15, 2031.
- Bitcoin mining will be banned in 10 regions and territories, including Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, and the disputed regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson.
- Russia will also enforce partial restrictions on mining operations in three Siberian regions—Irkutsk, Buryatia, and Zabaykalsky—during the winter, aligning with high energy consumption periods. These restrictions are set to start from January 1 to March 15 for the initial year and will be extended from November 15 to March 15 in subsequent years.
- The ban affects both mining pool and individual cryptocurrency mining activities.
- The list of regions and territories is not final and is subject to change based on the decisions made by the commission responsible for the development of the electric power industry. These restrictions aim to ensure a balance in energy consumption while considering the needs of various industries, reports TASS.
- Since November, mining in the Russian Federation has been 'legalized,' provided that individuals submit information on their acquired assets and cryptocurrency addresses to the Federal Tax Service (FNS).
- Russian mining pool e4pool shut down its operations earlier this month, citing regulatory restrictions.
"To be a legitimate mining pool in Russia, you must register yourself in a special government list of 'mining operators.'" The team added, "Also, you must send all data about your 'clients' to the tax office. Our cypherpunk views can't match all this."
