SEC Chair Gary Gensler Announces Resignation Effective January 20, 2025
Gary Gensler, the Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, has announced his intention to resign on January 20, 2025, according to a statement released on Thursday.
- Gary Gensler was appointed as the chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission back in 2021. His term originally was set to expire in June 2026.
- During his tenure at the SEC, Gensler led efforts to promote central clearing in Treasury markets, introduced reforms that tie executive compensation to performance, and continued initiatives to protect investors in cryptocurrency markets.
- Under Gensler's leadership, some in the 'crypto' industry have labeled him a villain due to the SEC's enforcement actions against major companies like Coinbase, Binance, Gemini, and Kraken. Between 2021 and 2023, the Commission filed over 90 cases, most of which involved accusations of unregistered securities offerings.
"It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve with them on behalf of everyday Americans and ensure that our capital markets remain the best in the world. I thank @POTUS for entrusting me with this incredible responsibility. The SEC has met our mission and enforced the law without fear or favor," said Gensler on X.
- The statement comes after President-elect Donald Trump vowed during his campaign to remove Gary Gensler on the first day of his second term.
