Tether, Lightning Labs Announce USDT on Lightning Network
Tether has announced the integration of USDT into Bitcoin’s ecosystem, encompassing both its base layer and the Lightning Network. This integration is supported by the Taproot Assets protocol, developed by Lightning Labs.
- Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, and Elizabeth Stark, CEO of Lightning Labs, made the announcement during their fireside chat at the first-ever Plan ₿ Forum in El Salvador.
- The integration will utilize Taproot Assets, a protocol that enables interoperability between stablecoins and a range of other assets issued on Bitcoin and moved via the Lightning Network.
"Once fully integrated, USDt will operate seamlessly on Bitcoin’s base layer and its layer 2 Lightning Network. This will enable high-speed, low-cost transactions while combining Bitcoin’s robust security and scalability," was stated in the press release.
- This announcement signifies a potential change for stablecoins, which have mostly been utilized on altcoin networks such as Ethereum and Tron.
- "Tether is committed to driving innovation in the Bitcoin ecosystem. By enabling USDt on the Lightning Network, we are not only reinforcing Bitcoin’s foundational principles of decentralization and security but also creating practical solutions for remittances, payments, and other financial applications that demand both speed and reliability," said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether.
